- Marking Alignment Points: Prior to removal, the exact positions of the roller and the hairspring stud are marked on the underside of the balance rim. Returning the roller and hairspring to their precise original position is essential for maintaining the watch’s beat and making the subsequent poising process significantly easier [02:43].
- Protecting the Balance Wheel: To remove the hairspring collet without deforming the balance wheel, avoid using lifting levers. Instead, utilizing a Horia tool allows downward pressure to crack the rivet cleanly while fully supporting the balance arms from underneath [04:42].

2. The Efficient “Three-Punch” Riveting Method
Riveting a new balance staff onto a brass balance wheel can seem complex, but streamlining your workspace makes the process fast, reliable, and repeatable. By utilizing a simplified three-punch method on the staking set, you avoid searching through countless punches [07:35]:
- Punch 1 (Support Punch): Rests in the staking set anvil to support the base of the new balance staff [09:42].
- Punch 2 (Flat / Staking Punch): Seats and presses the balance wheel firmly onto the staff shoulder.
- Punch 3 (Domed Punch): Flares and spreads the rivet material cleanly over the balance wheel arm [10:01].
By alternating between the domed punch to flare the steel and the flat punch to drive it down, a secure rivet is formed [10:18]. To verify the fit, hold the staff firmly with flat pliers and gently attempt to twist the balance wheel—there should be zero slippage [12:34].
3. Truing the Balance Wheel
Once riveted, the balance assembly must be checked for trueness in the callipers. A bent or warped balance wheel will wobble during operation, resulting in lost amplitude or friction against neighbouring components.
